NORTH BUTTE LODGE # 230, GRIDLEY
Masonry was inaugurate at Gridley, Butte County, when a dispensation was granted the Grand Master LEONIDAS E. PRATT June 20, 1873, to Brethren at Gridley, Butte County, and at the twenty-fourth Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge, October 18, 1873, a charter was granted to them as North Butte Lodge No. 230, with the following officers and members: Matthias L. Tescher, W.M.; John M. Pugh, S.W.; James A. Clanton, J.W.; Lewis C. Stone, Treas.; John C. Young, Sec.; Aaron Pugh, S.D.; Hironimus Will, J.D.; George A. Keith, Marshal; Samuel J. Davis, John Beall, Stewarts;Willson T. Woods, Tyler. Master Masons--Benjamin F. Dodson, Edward P. Hughes, John N. Lindsay, William D. Peck, Joshua Stafford, Thomas E. Vanfossen, ELijah W. Williston. Entered Apprentice, William R. Rodgers.
Of the above charter members only three are now on the roll, Dodson, Stafford and Vanfossen. There are reported forty Master Masons in the last returns in 1898, with the following officers and Past Masters; James Marshall, W.M.; Washington D. Barker, S. W.; Arthur Richter, J.W.; George D. Wickman, Treas.; Marcus J. Bigelow, Sec.; Thomas B. Channon, Chaplain; Homer A. Woodworth, S.D.; John H. Jones, J.D.; Charles A. Moore, Marshal; Sydney H. Morgan, Riley Campbell, Stewards;; James Colville, Tyler; Past Masters--Marcus J. Bigelow, Edward E. Biggs, Homer A. Woodworth, James T. Galbreath, Richard A. Norman.
W. M. Bro. Matthias L. Tescher, the first Master in 1873, remained a member seven years then withdrew. He was succeeded by W.M. Bro. John Madison in 1874, and he withdrew in 1880. W.M. Bro. Aaron Pugh was elected in 1875-1877, he died in 1897. He was also a member of the Masonic Veteran Association. W.M. Bro. Adam H. Lamme was elected in 1876 and withdrew in 1879. The senior Past Master on roll who rendered splendid service W.M. Bro Marcus J. Bigelow served six terms ion 1878, 1882-3-4-5-6. He was succeeded by W.M. Bro. Joshua Stafford in 1879-1880; he withdrew in 1883. W.M. Bro. Emmanuel B. Morgan served the Lodge as Master in 1892, and was succeeded by W.M. Homer A. Woodworth in 1893-4. W.M. Bro. James T. Galbreath was elected in 1895. W.M. Bro. Richard A. Norman was re-elected Master in 1896-7, and made a good record. He was succeeded in 1898 by W.M. Bro Marshal.
